Who is training for?

TAll companions complete our training, unless they already hold recognised, industry-standard healthcare qualifications — such as nursing, professional caring, or GP training. In those cases, we’re happy to recognise the experience they already bring

What's the purpose of the training?

The learning objectives are in place to support the health and well-being of the Host and the Companion during the homeshare. It is an introduction and insight into some aspects of shared living.

How do I do the training? Is it in person or online?

The training is online. Some learning activities may include journaling, and connecting with other Friend at Home members for reflective sharing. You will need a secure internet connection to undertake training. You will need a pen, paper and use of a lap top rather than a phone. Your attendance may be recorded on video to evidence identity and completion.

Is the training 'medical'?

No — the training focuses on basic awareness of certain health issues only. It is not diagnostic, and it is not a substitute for professional medical training. Companions are not trained to the standards of qualified carers or medically trained professionals.

What will I learn ?

Foundations for assisting in non-medical home support

Covers fundamentals of home-health care / general caring for older adults, understanding roles, communication, basic assistance tasks, getting help in an emergency and CPR.

How long is the training?

As a Companion, you will be asked to complete up to 12 hours of training each year. 25% of the training (The first Module), MUST be evidenced as completed BEFORE you begin your Agreement and is part of your onboarding. It includes CPR and reaching medical help in an emergency as a Friend at Home.

How much is it?

Friend at Home Training is FREE once you have been successfully vetted as a Companion.

What is the value of the training?

By undertaking the training as a companion - you may provide additional support in the case of an emergency. However, you are not receiving medical training. Companions are not medically trained carers, support workers or nurses, nor are companions legally liable in any way for providing emergency care or assistance.

Does the Host go through training?

We speak with each host to go through terms and do our best to ensure expectations are aligned for the Agreement to work. Currently there is no Host training.
